Whitt's Log (11)
A few weeks ago, I was speaking with the owner of a local brewery regarding a non-profit donation to a dream of mine: The Actors Repertory Company of Pennsylvania. He asked me what I was currently doing, and I told him about the film. When I mentioned the film was set in a rainforest and followed the lives of missionaries, his vitriol was apparent. And immediate. I was taken aback by his comments to me about religion, which I leave to your imagination, and also the furiosity of his rhetoric. It surprised me. But, I'm always being surprised. A miracle, but life is still fresh for me. I was surprised when I got this part, especially after I had enough of that stale sandwich called 'Hollywood'....

Right place. Right time. Even in a urinal. Which actually happened to me once. Now, it just may be that you finally have your own picture. Usually, this is after years of working in LA. So, overnight really does not 'happen' for most of us.
And, at 42, to be honest with you, I'm simply not interested anymore in anything 'happening' overnight for me. It's done. I'm worn out.
One night I was playing pool somewhere in Hollywood; we had driven in from the Valley. My roommate at the time (a real quiet actor/waiter from Minnesota; docile even, except for the fact he liked to put his head through the walls of our apartment watching the Vikings on Sundays; they sucked at the time), he decided ...

De Niro used to never give interviews. Not because he was an idiot, but because he was smart. What makes a celebrity any more special than anyone else? Note to all actors in Hollywood. If you're not acting: please shut up. Nobody cares.
Reminds me again of an adult John Wilkes Booth: 'actors are to be seen and not to be known.' As actors, I think we should retain some mystery to ourselves. And like Kinski, appreciate the fact that darkness is in all of us. We don't really need to illuminate our whole souls with light. It's those shadows inside of us as actors that fuel us. Make us who we are as human beings. And lead us, hopefully, to being a better person and actor. They're places that w...

'A great adventure...'
I've been thinking about that last line I wrote. I'm forty-two years of age. That's old to be a 'struggling' actor. It's important to be honest with yourself in this business. If you know you have talent, and you're not fooling yourself about it, then you should pursue the craft.
And, I have. For many years.
The pursuit was fun in my twenty's.. At thirty-two, I was still going strong, but wishing 'if I could only make a living at it.' When I performed at Shakespeare's Globe in London, England, I was working in a gas station. From 5 am till 4 pm. Then, I attended rehearsals until midnight, and did it all over again and again and again. London was a highpoint ...

Turns out these guys were indeed part of the crew! I just had never seen them before. They were heading back to the river to move the crane from one location to another the next day. Whew! When youre alone in the jungle, it can play tricks on your mind.
Anyway, I made my way back to our meeting place and later that night we headed back to the coast. Its a neat little place and theres an open air bar area on ground level that sits on the edge of the ocean. You can see the photos on my website at [url=http://www.whittbrantley.com]www.whittbrantley.com Just click on The Interior Series.
